Use of Modal Verb ‘HAVE’

Modal verbs are used for taking permission, showing ability, seeking advice, or showing intention etc. In this blog we will have a close look at modal verb ‘have’.

May/Might + Have

This expression is used for demonstrating only possibility relating to the past action .Example:

She may/might have gone yesterday.

She might have failed.

Could + have

This expression is used for past ability while denoting action did not occur. Example:

I could have gone London last month. (but I did not).

I could have cleaned the room. (but I did not).

Should + have

This type of expression is used to express obligation in the past .It may imply the non – occurrence of the action. Example:

You should have accompanied your friend.

Must + have

This form is used for a past action indicating that action did not take place. Example:

You must have completed your work in given time.

He must have helped his friend.

Ought to+ to have

This expression is used in relation to past action of duty that was not accomplished or an action that was overlooked in the past. Example:

You ought to have performed your duties.

You ought to have driven slowly

To be + have

This expression is used to express an action that could not take place according to schedule. Example:

He was to have attended meeting but fell ill.

Need not +have

This form is used for an action which was not required but was executed. Example

You need not have gone there.

    What i’ just seen was that w constructed these expressions with ( past forms of modals plus forms of present perfect of the main verbs) .. Is it correct?

    The imporatnce of English language cannot be overlooked. For getting a foreign degree we have to struggle to score high in TOFEL/ GRE AND ILETS test. This practice will help us to get through fom those difficulties to a great extent.
