Try these…

Hi all!!

My students keep asking me one question time and again ‘How do we remember words?’ ..How do we remember words?!! And now that’s not a very tough question to answer. Well I ask you all, how do you remember the lyrics of your favorite song? How well you reproduced those heavy dialogues from your favorite movie? How instantly your mind recorded the mobile number of an attractive friend? When all these things can happen and prove that you have an elephant’s memory, learning words should not be a Herculean task, should it? I want to share with you a simple funda. You may not like it, but when applied works like a miracle. Here it goes: When you find anything tough, fall in love with it. You have to fall in love with vocabulary and the process of adding newer words to your list. After you fell in love with the entire process, keep applying the new word to a person or situation that inspires or irritates you. Do this and say these words and sentences aloud and use them religiously in your day to day speech and you will never forget them. I am now going to give you a simple list of a few word pairs, personality traits rather. Look at them and try to apply that word pair to a person you know. This person could be your friend, relative or just an acquaintance. Do it, and I promise you will enjoy the process immensely, and what else- the word’s imprinted in your memory forever!!

Here goes the list:

1. Sullen and lazy

2. Prim and humorless

3. witty and well-informed

4. Judgmental and controlling

5. Cheerful and bold

6. Thorough and practical

7. Calm and sympathetic

8. Logical and outspoken

9. Irresponsible and cocky

10. Loyal and down-to-earth

11. Critical and arrogant

12. Wholehearted and passionate

13. Temperamental and sulky

14. Sensitive and loving

15. Foolhardy and rash

16. Moody and frail

17. Stubborn and gloomy

18. Honest and objective

19. Persistent and firm

20. Aloof and domineering

21. Spiritual and intuitive

22. Hasty and unprepared

23. Creative and adventurous

24. Overcautious and rigid…

Now, try all these words and share with me your results.

Hi, i am ganjar form indonesia. I just want to share based my experience to improve english conversation and listening skills by watching english-movie that present translation in your national language. By looking at transalation, try to predict what conversation going on on the movie by speaking loudly or just mumbering. Or predict what translation of conversation going on. Then asses how close our prediction with the conversation or translation going on. By this way we don’t just enjoy watching movie but also improve our english skills.

  39. DusanRamljak on November 6th, 2009 12:42 pm

    Hi again,
I have tried this practice and it was really fun. I involved my whole family and we succeeded to apply pairs to persons we know. There is one pair that we could share with you because you all might know this character from cartoons. As soon as I explained to my wife what sullen means she immediately said that Garfield is best described by the first pair – sullen and lazy.
It might be interesting if you could share with us some common characters from cartoons or movies?
Uhm… well… Let me think… Here goes the list… I will add up and you too might add up or correct me?
    sullen and lazy Garfield
    irresponsible and cocky James Bond

  40. AnuVeluri on November 6th, 2009 2:04 pm

Hey this is one great technique..really works..put it on forums Dusan..

  41. Dusan Ramljak on November 6th, 2009 3:37 pm

For some reason, I couldn’t register on forum. I will do it when I come home. Anyway, the list continues
cheerful and bold John Mc Laine (Die hard)

  42. Dusan Ramljak on November 6th, 2009 3:41 pm

Uhm… Well, actually John McLane and I forgot
    critical and arrogant Cruella DeVil

  43. kustiati on November 14th, 2009 2:48 am

thankyou for the lists of idiomatic both in positive and negative form. could you give us about terms in cooking and parts of human body?

  45. rita on November 30th, 2009 3:25 pm
