Computer Based Exam

After months of hard work your day is finally here. You must have spent your previous months in acquiring lot of tools and techniques that will help you in boosting your GRE score. But do not forget GRE is a computer based test and there are certain conventions to take computer based test and you must aware to all those rules just like you know GRE performance enhancing tips. Here is one reality check; your accidentally triggered wrong button can put you in a complete mess and there is no way to back. So following are must read points before going for CBT based test:

Take Computer tutorials session seriously.

You will be given a computer tutorial 20 minutes before test (this time will be not counted in your test) .In this tutorial you will learn: how to use a mouse, how to select an answer, how to use the testing tool, how to scroll. You will be required all these actions during your test. So take this exercise seriously.

Don’t rush in clicking navigation buttons (on bottom screen).

There are six buttons (three on right and three on left) at the bottom of your screen .These buttons are read as: Quit, Exit, Time, Help, Confirm, Next. If you will hit ‘quit’ button (even unwittingly) then you will be abandoned from that section on which you are working currently or may be from whole test. There will be no way to bring you back in the test again. Similarly, choosing ‘exit’ you will be terminated from the test immediately. Clicking on ‘time’ will stop time information at the top of your screen as result of that you will be unable to pace up with time. Carefully hit on ‘confirm’ button because once you have confirmed your answer you will be unable to change it.

Take your time in answering questions.

You can not skip tough questions for later answering due to computer adaptive nature of test. Same time you have no option to change your answer later. So go through each question thoroughly and give each question its due time .Do not get bogged down on just one question only. Same time, do not rush in answering questions.

Only worry about on screen question.

While taking your test if you realize that you have answered some question wrong in previous section then do not bug yourself in second guessing because there is no way to change it now. Just pay attention only on question which is displaying on screen.

Have vigilant approach towards five-minute warning.

There will be a system generated alert message that will flash on your screen just 5 minutes before ending of each section. At this time you can do random guessing for tough questions because we know that there is no negative marking, so it is suggested doesn’t leave any question unanswered even when you are running out of time.

Kindly leave your comment below this blog.

After all the hard work, your final day is here. Many students feel confused about what they should do in this period, and due to their over anxiety they blew their chances. So through this post, we wish to suggest you what to do and what you should avoid for your crucial day.

Get it together. You must pile up all the essential things like: Admission ticket, ID, Water, and Energy bars (for the break) night before, so you don’t have to bustle in the morning.

Eat normally. Do not gorge yourself with food. Sure, GRE day is special, but that doesn’t mean you need to plan a special menu. Eat what you normally eat. If your test is in the afternoon, make sure to have a light meal before it. Bring some snack (energy bars) for the break. It’s a long day, and you need to be energetic.

Proper sleep is important. It is very important to be alert and energetic for Test Day, and proper night sleep is important to feel fresh for the test day. But it doesn’t mean that should get into bed at 8:00 and stare at the ceiling, but do get in bed early enough to ensure you have enough sleep.

Dress in layer. GRE generally happens in close cabins, and inside temperature can surprise you. Do dress up in layers. If it’s hot, take some clothes off. If it’s cold, leave them on.

Arriving early is good. This is very important for those who are habitual of coming late. Save this fashionable lateness for your social life. Do not rush around like a crazy person at your test day. If you don’t know the exact location of your testing center, then you should visit the place at least week or two before just to be sure you know your way.

Jump-start your brain. Just like in Marathon runners stretch before the big event to warm up. Similarly, it would be helpful to do a bit of reading before the test to get your mind warmed up.

Have Patience. Don’t get too excited or too nervous on reaching your test center. First you have to go through the usual standardized testing bureaucratic technicalities, before you finally shown to a computer.

Prepare for the worst. You need to be ready to start the test with Analytical Writing topics which are not of your interest, followed by your less favorite multiple-choice section as we know that Math and Verbal sections can appear in either order. If something like that happens, you need to be prepared.

Choose your battles. Don’t waste your time just pondering on one question. Keep moving throughout each section. If a question isn’t working for you, guess and move on as there is no negative marking in GRE so never leave any question unanswered.

Use Your Breaks smartly:

There will be 10 minute break after analytical writing section. If you need to answer the natures call and it is not an emergency wait to do it during break time. If you do it any other time it will count in your test time.

Do not forget:

Do not forget to bring the names and codes of the schools where you want your scores to be sent. You need to prepare them beforehand.

At last do remember GRE is surely important, but it’s not the end of the world. Take the test with positive mind Set. Put your all efforts into it, but once you are out of testing center don’t bug yourself about how you write the test.

We will love to hear from you. Kindly share with us your experience about GRE test if you have any, and your valuable opinion about this blog.

Warm Regards,

This is a question that has been asked by number of students at several times; today I shall try to answer this question in brief. Learning vocabulary is always a very grueling task, especially for those who are preparing for GRE exam, because they have to learn extensive vocabulary. GRE often asks questions based on unfamiliar meaning of familiar- looking words. You might have your own techniques to learn vocabulary. You may also try following tips to learn vocabulary:

*	Purchase a good pocket dictionary regardless if you already have a large one, and always carry it with you.

*	Regular reading of newspapers, novels, books, magazines and other formal and informal manuscripts can surely help you in improving vocabulary.

*	Be alerted for new words and when come across some new word then consult your dictionary, both for its meaning and the nearest opposite meaning word.

*	Try to guess the meaning of a new word by analyzing it’s root, stem, suffixes then cross check your guessed meaning with dictionary meaning. This exercise will surely help you in learning new words.

*	Try to form all the possible sentences by using all the possible meaning of new words.

*	Use mnemonics or memory trick to learn the meaning of a new word.

*	Try to relate a new word with words that you already know. For example, Impropriety meaning not proper other words related to this can be improperness, unsuitable, indecorum. Now make a list of words that can be considered as Impropriety.

*	Play word games like: Scrabble, Boggle, Mad Libs and do solve crossword puzzles.

*	Always learn vocabulary with its contextual meaning as isolated vocabulary can create confusion. For example, take a word ‘garnish’ ,which you may have heard in many cookery shows ,when chef says ,” Now garnish Parsley with boiled potatoes. This context clarifies the meaning of garnish.

*	A genuine interest in words is mandatory to improve vocabulary. Never let go any opportunity to learn a new word.

*	Make flashcards of the words and run through them regularly. You can also visit learnwordlist.com for on line flash cards.

*	Create images of word using your imagination.

*	Simply talking with other peoples and watching television can help you in learning new words.

*	Last but not the least take all the vocabulary test on learnwordlist.com .And do register yourself with learnwordlist.com for regular vocabulary updates.

Regardless, what technique you follow train yourself beforehand to deal with all types of vocabulary questions that may appear in GRE exam. With the intention of excellent GRE score, you will need to learn words at a much faster rate. Now, I hope you must have found some word of advice to improve your vocabulary. Kindly share your views by posting your comment in feedback section, below this blog.

Wishing you success!!

First and foremost let me thank you all for the very good support you have been offering. Your participation in the earlier tests was amazing! I stand motivated. Owing to that I come up with another small exercise for you. The exercise is similar to the earlier one that you had taken and performed convincingly. You will now find a set of 25 words. You need to suggest the ‘opposite’ of the word beginning with ‘G’ The only difference is, you have to now begin your word (opposite) with ‘G’. Earlier it was a synonym or meaning beginning with ‘P’. All you need to do is ‘think’ for a while and I am sure you will find the right answer. Besides thinking, I also suggest you having a scribbling pad, a dictionary (Oxford Advanced Learner’s preferably), and an Oxford Thesaurus (A thesaurus helps you find out the synonyms and antonyms of a given word!!).

Many students keep asking me whether it is better to learn words by heart or to write, scribble and then put it in contextual usage and memorize it. I always suggest them the latter method. Words are like relatives, a mere Hi! Hello! will not bring them closer to you. When you spend substantial time with them, remember they will never betray you. A mere ‘mug up’ business will land you nowhere. On the contrary you will find yourself exactly at the point you started your journey of vocabulary learning. Is that not a sheer waste of time and resources?! So please bear in mind that there is no shortcut to success. You need to slog and put in all your mental and physical energy to see yourself reaching the coveted goal!!
