Sentence structuring some do’s and dont’s
• ‘Quite’ should be used in the sense of perfect or completely.
Incorrect : She is very innocent.
Correct : She is quite innocent.
• ‘Too’ means ‘more than enough’.
Incorrect: She feels very weak to walk
Correct: She feels too weak to walk.
• When comparing two qualities of the same person or thing use more not -er to form the comparative.
She is more clever than wise. (not cleverer)
• Collective nouns takes singular and plural verb according to their usage in sentence
The committee were divided in their opinion. (Committee has plural outcome)
Asia is inhibited by many people (Asia as a singular entity).
• The phrase ‘just now’ refers to past time while ‘immediately’ refers to future time.
Incorrect: The master has come immediately
Correct : The master has come just now
• Never write ‘but ‘after ‘No other’ instead write ‘than’.
Incorrect: He has no other friend but you
Correct : He has no other friend than you.
• Always write ‘when’ not ‘then after ‘Hardly ‘or ‘Scarcely.’
Incorrect: He had hardly said this than he was interrupted by teacher.
Correct: He had hardly said this when he was interrupted by teacher.
• Abstract and Material noun should be always be use in singular form.
Incorrect: He likes the poetries of William Blake
Correct: He likes the poems of William Blake
• Until/unless until means ‘time before’ and unless shows ‘condition’.
I cannot go there unless you tell me to go. (Not until).
Until you work hard, you will improve. (Not unless).
• Doubt that/doubt whether, doubt that use in positive sense and doubt whether in negative sense.
I do not doubt that you will pass. (Positive sense)
I doubt whether you will pass. (Negative sense)
• Fewer/less, few refer to numbers and less refers to quantity.
No fewer than 60 students were present there.
He is no less intelligent than his sister.
• Due to/caused by introduce adjective phrase and must modify noun or pronoun. Otherwise should not be used to begin sentence.
I Incorrect: Due to teachers strike, the college remains close
Correct: Because of teachers strike, the school remains close

hi!, let me try to explain that in some of “my” books tthere are rules showing that ‘ too ‘ has two meanings-a/ more than enough; b/ repeating the same as the first part of the saying. But the place we have to put it is different. in a/ -in front of the pronoun, adverb.. ., in b/ at the end of the sentence; have to put comma before it.

what is the difference between a reflexive pronoun and an adjective?
Ali, words which have ‘self’ as suffixe are called as reflexive pronoun.whereas, adjectives are words which modifies noun or pronoun.

our teachers in Ghana tell us not to start a sentence with `because` but you are telling me to.you need to convince me the more because i am interested.
Fahd, it is said you should not start your sentence with conjunction like but and because, but now it is in practice to start with sentence with these conjunctions ..

I cannot go there unless you tell me to go. ( this denotes the time, i will wait for the time when you will tell me to go)
Until you work hard, you will improve.( this shows condition, in order to improve you must work hard(this is condition)
