Punctuations!!!

Punctuations are not same as punctual meaning prompt. Albeit, we are talking about the most important aspect of English language that is many a times push aside. Speaking is a convoluted process and often includes pause, sudden influx of emotion that causes voice intonation, changing volume and tone. When we are writing sentences with these mentioned features, we will require certain set of signs to bring out exact meaning. These set of signs are called as Punctuation.

Every symbol of punctuation has its proper meaning and it should be use accordingly. Inappropriate use of punctuation can completely change the meaning of sentence even though your sentence formation is absolutely correct. Many of us have heard the humorous story in which the judge gave the verdict, “Hang him, not leave him.” A miscreant altered it thus: “Hang him not. Leave him.”, it was completely opposite of the verdict due to punctuation error . Correct use of punctuation shows that student has good control over grammar.
Here, I shall discuss with you some generally use punctuations. Hoping that when next time when you will be writing, you will take care of little thing in English called as punctuation.
Period or Full stop (.)
Full stop always comes at the end of sentence .It should always be placed within the quotes.
Eg. I like French language.
Eg. She says, “ she will be back in evening.”
Mark of Interrogation (?)
Interrogation sign comes at the end of question statement. It should also be place within quotes as like period.
Eg. Who is your best friend?
Eg. She asked,”When you will arrive?”
Comma (,)
Use comma to separate items from the list.
Eg. Fruit basket contains mango, banana, and apple.
To connect two independent clause with the help of conjunction.
Eg. He wrote the paper well, but could not secure pass marks.
Use comma before quotes.
Eg. She said, ”she will not attend party.”
Colon (:)
Use colon with a sentence which contains a list.
Eg. Our college offers specialization in following streams: (1) English (2) Math
(3) Ancient history.
Use a colon after the salutation when writing a formal letter.
Eg: “Dear Johan:”
Semi colon (;)
Use semi colon to connect two independent clauses.
Eg. I am going to market; I need to buy some clothes.
Hyphen (-)
Use hyphen with compound word.
Eg. Up-to-date.
Son-in –law
Use hyphen with compounds of half, ex.
Eg Ex-wife
Half-day
Round bracket ( ), Curly bracket {},square bracket []
Use round bracket ( ) when you want to provide some additional information.
Eg. I love my younger sister (she is 5 years younger to me) and I like to help her all the time.
Use curly { } braces if you want to write some number list.
Eg. {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
Use Square bracket [ ] to quote authors comments
Eg. “I’d like to thank [some friends] and my parents [sic] for their love and support.

I hope now onwards when you will be writing then you will be concerned about correct punctuation. Above, i have discussed with you the general use of punctuation (not all uses of punctuation). You can share some interesting rules about punctuation like the mentioned above, if you have any. We shall be eagerly waiting for your responses on this blog.

Wishing you Success!!

Hello, please i have a problem with the use of (:) as described in the statement below.
Use a colon after the salutation when writing a formal letter.
i think comma(,) should be used instead of the colon.

Thanks for your comment Sepenu, comma is used with personal or formal letters.Business letters always take colons is salutation.I hope your doubt is clear now.
