How to work for best results..

If you really want to benefit from these blogs, if you want a great score in the GRE, if you want to remember thousands of words and that too unforgettably, then there are a few things that you need to train yourself on. Without a proper, systematic training on Vocabulary Improvement Strategies nothing can be achieved.

I would like to state here some principles of learning:

  1. Space your learning- Know Thyself: It is essential for you to understand the pace of your learning. Are you a fast learner? Or do you require some moderate time for learning? An analysis of this kind is very important. Once you understand this you will certainly learn at an effective pace. Apportion yourself a few words everyday and try to understand the word from the meaning perspective and the contextual usage perspective. Have your own note book and personalized dictionary. Have your own paraphernalia for language learning.
  2. Haste is waste: Do not rush. Do not commit to learning 500 words a day. That’s absolutely quixotic and meaningless!! Instead commit yourself to just five words a day and imbibe their meanings thoroughly.
  3. Review: You have to keep going back to the words you learned every now and then. Words are like relatives, you don’t keep visiting them; they feel offended and would leave the room of your memory…J
  4. See where you stand: After all this effort, won’t you feel like testing your knowledge. Keep taking tests frequently. This will help you identify your faults. You can then come up with suitable remedies.

But most important of all ‘Have a plan of action’ and ‘follow it religiously’!!

  36. RICHMOND DUGBATSE on August 1st, 2009 2:50 pm

FROM WHAT I JUST READ, I CAN LEARN 3 NEW WORDS A DAY BUT HOW DO THEY BECOME PART OF ME IF I DO NOT USE THEM IN MY DAILY CONVERSATIONS? GOD BLESS YOU ALL FOR YOUR EFFORT TO MAKE EVERYBODY PROFICIENT IN ENGLISH.

  37. AnuVeluri on August 4th, 2009 12:33 pm

Dear Richmond, I can surely understand ur problem…I think u have to ‘create’ situation for speaking in English..there may be at least a few friends of urs who are genuinely interested in the language…so form a group and start speaking…all language learning theories emphasize ‘practice’ over rote learning..

    Dear host,
first of all, let me say a big thank you to the team that made this platform a reality.

Though,am still on with my undergraduate studies but coming across this site is not in error at all. I have been inspired to take learning a major priority so as to be fluent in speech in the public setting.

For this, i have concluded taken the GRE as soon as i get over with my undergraduate studies. I would like it if these words are also used in a sentence so as to know the right context each belong.
Once again thanks for the efforts and good works well done.

  45. AnuVeluri on September 1st, 2009 4:45 pm

Dear Dairo, we do have words and their contextual usage..follow the series GRE Essential Vocabulary pls..

    Hi!
I think that I found the best spot to write about my overall preparation for GRE. Well, there is nothing here about Quantitative segment, but I will try to show you how do I see analogy between above mentioned and Verbal segment and my experience with the two.
They both consist of a huge number of definitions and both require logical reasoning. For each and every assignment you need to find the appropriate meaning and apply particular definition. As far as Quantitative segment is concerned if I am extremely distracted my score “nosedive” to 90% while on the other hand, when I am absolutely focused and concentrated I can score no more than 60% on the Verbal segment. If I do not know some definition in the first one, I can derive it in no time, while in a latter I am doomed. I know what I have done to increase my Quantitative abilities, I practiced day and night throughout my elementary and high school. But, I practiced English with same intensity and passion. In fact, it might be that now, when I am absolutely aware of the analogy I will be able to improve my scores? Unfortunately, when this improvement will occur, I am not sure. I am sure that I need it fast :-(
    Best wishes
    Dusan
