Common GRE Words – Verbs of ‘Denial’ – Easy ways to memorize

Sponsored Links

Hi!! I guess you all enjoyed the earlier post on easy ways to remember some tough GRE words Memorize Tough GRE Words Easily- I.

I reiterate, the words that we are practicing in these blogs are high frequency words and you will certainly find them in the GRE. Therefore, exercise a little interest and a little passion to commit them to your memory.

This week we are going to memorize a few verbs of ‘Denial’…not to mention, they are the words which keep appearing on the GRE Exams. Denial is a refusal to believe in a doctrine, theory, or the like. We will now work exhaustively with just seven high frequency GRE verbs /words of denial.

  • Abjure: Abjure is a verb of denial which means to give up, disown, disavow, renounce. Pretty good number of synonyms, aren’t they? A person who abjures is the one who gives up worldly concerns in quest of some nobler pursuit.

Do you remember any philosopher/saint who abjured worldly benefits in order to attain salvation?

Good, if you do remember, link that person to this verb of denial and you will never forget. Both the person and the verb ((smiles))

  • Ostracized: ‘Ostracized’ means to exclude, eliminate from a group, society, conversation or any other such thing by a general consent. When a person is ostracized, he generally is not allowed to participate in any group related activities.

Did you ever see a movie or a documentary dealing with the families of culprits? If you had, then you know that children of culprits are usually ostracized from their community. You can visualize a scene I guess or a situation wherein women from that particular culprit’s community, banging the door against the child’s face. Did you recollect any such scene? If you did, kudos!! For you will never forget this word too!!

  • Repudiated: To repudiate is to reject, disclaim, deny, not accept, rebut. Well, that’s interesting. One can repudiate a doctrine, a principle. Last but not least one can also repudiate (disown) one’s son!! Have you come across a thing like that, wherein a father repudiated (disowned) his own child? A visit to a nearby rehabilitation center will get you face to face with addicted children repudiated by their parents.

  • Proscribed: ‘Proscribed’ is a high frequency verb of denial which means banned, controlled, restricted. To proscribe is to banish or outlaw (a person)

  • Nullified: ‘Nullified’ is not so tough high frequency GRE word. It’s a word that’s more or less familiar to many of us. Even if it is not, it can be committed to memory pretty fast. Null is void. To nullify is to cancel, to invalidate, to abolish, to quash so on and so forth.

  • Rescind: ‘Rescind’ is again a verb of denial which means to annul, to cancel, countermand, withdraw etc.

  • Confute: to confute something is to show something to be false. One can confute an argument, means; show an argument to be false, invalid or even defective.

Don’t just read these words, jot them down in your notebook and use them at least once or twice in your regular conversation today. Utter the words aloud- each word five times!!

As I always tell you do not just mug up the meaning of a word, instead:

1. Work with the word.

2. Expand its meaning into a suitable context.

3. Relate it to the person or situation you know.

4. Share the word with your friends, colleagues

5. Try to pronounce the word aloud at least five times

Practice the above mentioned words this week and share with us a few more words, verbs of denial. Please do suggest a new verb of denial, in case you know any.

Good and Fine! so the way you advice us to use for us to easily memorize what we learnt is indeed fruitful!

I’m used to tell colleagues who like appreciating my level of English, that simlpy Practice helps to Get and not Forget!

so, a verb of denial i’ve to share with you is; To Segregate (To be put apart from the group or community), To Deport (To bring back someone in his country of origine mostly if with no required docs to stay abroad, or any other legal reason), To Cancel ( To break a decision for example, and so forth). Plz will be happy to know if what I’m saying is true!

    Safe ocupations!

  18. AnuVeluri on November 5th, 2009 7:46 am

Hi thanks so much for sharing these words!

  19. Genomora on November 10th, 2009 12:58 pm

    interesting,
the words are really helpful, especially is used in the analystical writing. It increases the number of unique and difficult words and if used contextually gives better chance of a higher score.

Since I have been studying for my GRE I have no time for other pursuits, someone might think I have been proscribed from my social circles?

  20. AnuVeluri on November 10th, 2009 2:50 pm

Nice usage Genomora..thanks so much..keep sharing such words..and we also wish you success in GRE!!

  21. M.J. on November 18th, 2009 2:48 pm

I congratulate you on your site. You have obviously put in a lot of work, and other than the adverts, it’s totally free. I strongly suggest that you publicize more. Your site should be better know outside of India where you seem to originate.
I do have a suggestion though. It would help if instead of just lists and alphabetical order, more of the words were categorized like today’s Verbs of Denial. Words out of context are much more difficult to learn. Word webs of similar or opposites work so much better.
I hope you take my suggestions in the vein they were meant, positive criticism. I do appreciate your work.

  22. M.J. on November 18th, 2009 2:57 pm

BTW, I forgot to mention in my first post that I live in Mexico City and accidentally found your great site when looking for help in learning vocabulary for the GRE.
You definitely need more publicity. There are many in Third World countries that need the assistance you so generously supply.

  23. AnuVeluri on November 18th, 2009 4:06 pm

Oh thanks MJ..we shall certainly consider all the points you suggested..keep in touch and keep sharing with us your views…

  24. AnuVeluri on November 18th, 2009 4:06 pm

Hmm I guess you are right, we shall certainly consider the point u made..

  25. Ave on November 21st, 2009 9:36 pm

HI thanks again for ur useful site .I need some words related to feminism or women’rights would u please sevd me a list on them?

  26. Ave on November 21st, 2009 9:40 pm

i have an idea i think it is more interesting to prepare wordlists on special topics rather than in alphabetical order. for example wordlist about education or marriage…..

  27. AnuVeluri on November 22nd, 2009 4:47 am

Hi, have you registered in forum? I think this is a good topic..we can put words relating to a particular list in the forum and ask other students to participate..this way we will have many words from a particular field with us..what say? u take the initiative..

  29. AnuVeluri on November 24th, 2009 10:37 am

Yes Aashish and it’s no fun..it’s a very serious affair..you have to imbibe the meaning of the word..never mug up the meaning of the words as preparatory school kids do..

  57. Abu Salah'Uddeen on March 9th, 2010 12:50 am

Being ostrascized for values and beliefs is an acceptable sacrifice, even though, those that repudiate or proscribe others from following the core doctrine of such values/beliefs are only driving them further towards it. Only the weak minded will abjure. They clearly do not realise that any act of goodness will be nullified and any future act of goodness will rescind a negative impact – even though the option to confute the allegations is evidently apparent. The mind boggles.

  58. AnuVeluri on March 9th, 2010 5:13 am

Hi Abu, u really made a very good use of these words..hey join the forum and share ytour knowledge with like minded friends..

Abnegate is another word for self-denial
or to not allow oneself to have (something); restrain, especially from indulging in some pleasure.

Example: “He abnegated himself wine and spirits”

    Hey Man

Thank you for providing daily updates regarding GRE vocabulary section. I am learning your methods day by day and thus increasing my strength. I have to appear for GRE on 20th April 2011. I feel quite confident about quant section, but when it comes to verbal part then automatically i lose over my confidence. But practicing from your Blog i am gaining over it.

I try to learn co-relating the words with my local language and thus making it remember.
