GRE: Reading Comprehension
‘Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man’, how insightful was Francis Bacon to write this! Indeed reading is one major and basic skill that is tested in many of the competitive examinations these days. No wonder it happens to be one major segment in the GRE.
The GRE General Test has three Reading Comprehension Passages. The length of a typical RC passage is between 500 and 650 words. All these passages have a euphemistic tone and are free from discrimination of any kind. We have to remember that the GRE is an American Examination, naturally the passages deal with the socio-economic, historical and scientific aspects pertaining to the great nation.
The tone of the passages is generally neutral, and the type of the Reading Comprehension is usually discursive (one having many views, contradictions and data pertaining to breakthrough researches). The number of questions asked ranges from 19 to 22.
The above mentioned are the technical details of the exam, now coming to the actual strategies that one needs to adopt for cracking this segment successfully, one has no way but to read the passage effectively, accurately and fast. There is no short-cut once again, to get through this segment with a feather in the cap. As a student you have to run through the passage with all your soul and heart.
It’s a human tendency to read articles faster and understand them better, those that appeal to him/her. Unfortunately you may see extremely ‘boring’ kind of passages on the computer screen in GRE. But that shouldn’t kill your enthusiasm to read. There’s no way my dear student, you have to fall in love with that passage and read it as if you were the writer, or at least a person who’s genuinely interested in similar issue. Yes, that’s right you have to read the passages with a ‘sense of inquiry’. As if there’s nothing between you and the comprehension you are reading. You have to keep your brain focused and free from thoughts not pertaining to GRE when you are reading.
You have to do a progressive reading. I strongly object ‘regression’, i.e. going back to the last read lines time and again. If you are doing that it shows that you are not an effective reader and you need a lot of practice before you take GRE. Few persons are born with photographic memory. We are not Swami Vivekananda or Acharya Vinobha Bhave to remember things in one single go.
Hence, I suggest you make use of the rough paper to jot down important data, dates while reading. This will make you feel committed to the passage. You can also do a lip-sync while reading. This helps in remembering things better. If you complement lip-sync to the movement of your eyes over the lines of RC you will remember the contents of the write-up a better way. Scientific studies prove this. As you are reading have a sense of belonging with the passage. Ask yourself why, where, who, what, which. Put them on the rough paper. Try to predict the future of the passage even as you are reading. Please be objective in your analysis, don’t become subjective. Put yourself in the author’s position and think. There is no ‘in my opinion’ in GRE – RC.
One very important thing about RC is Vocabulary. Please do not become panicky when you find an alien word. Guess the meaning of the word taking the broader context into consideration. Let the alien word not become a potential impediment during the process of reading. Remember, you have to do all these in stark 15 minutes!!
Effective reading techniques for GRE- RC in nutshell:
1. lip-sync while reading
2. read with a sense of inquiry
3. predict the future of the passage
4. remember the 5 Ws
5. guess the meanings of the words ( you don’t know) in broader context
6. do a progressive reading not a regressive one
7. jot down the important dates/data on a rough paper
Some students believe that they can first read the question and then read the passage. Dear students, what will you do when the very first question is asking you the central idea of the passage? Will that not be a criminal wastage of time? And please come out of the fallacy that the questions asked in GRE-RC are direct in nature. Most of them are inferential type questions. So you have to do a lot of ‘reading between the lines’. But the ETS does make your lives easier by providing the passage with paragraph numbers or highlighting certain words in the passage for a quick reference. Please read the passage as if you were in love with it.
Some GRE-RC options that can never be the correct answer choice:
- All hasty generalizations
- Options that support discrimination of any kind
- Options that have an acerbic tone
- irrelevant options ( red herring fallacy )
So out of the five options you are ideally left with one correct answer choice. Did you get my point there?… (That’s a great clue! smiles)
Let us now read what the ETS has to say about the Reading Comprehension segment of GRE:
{{**Reading comprehension questions measure your ability to read with understanding, insight and discrimination. This type of question explores your ability to analyze a written passage from several perspectives. These include your ability to recognize both explicitly stated elements in the passage and assumptions underlying statements or arguments in the passage as well as the implications of those statements or arguments.
Because the written passage upon which the questions are based presents a sustained discussion of a particular topic, there is ample context for analyzing a variety of relationships.
Pay attention to the following as you review the passage:
- The function of a word in relation to a larger segment of the passage
- The relationships among the various ideas in the passage
- The relationship of the author to the topic or to the audience.
You will find five types of reading comprehension questions to answer:
- The main point of the passage
- Information explicitly stated in the passage
- Information or ideas implied or suggested by the author
- Possible applications of the author’s ideas to other situations, including the identification of situations or processes analogous to those described in the passage
- The author’s logic, reasoning, or persuasive techniques
In each edition of the General Test, there are three or more reading comprehension passages, each providing the basis for answering two or more questions. The passages are drawn from different subject matter areas, including the humanities, the social sciences, the biological sciences, and the physical sciences.
Here are some approaches that may help you in answering reading comprehension questions.
- Since reading passages are drawn from many different disciplines and sources, you may not be familiar with the material in every passage. Do not be discouraged if you encounter unfamiliar material. Questions are to be answered on the basis of the information provided in the passage, and you are not expected to rely on outside knowledge of a particular topic.
- You should analyze each passage carefully before answering the accompanying questions. As with any kind of close and thoughtful reading, look for clues that will help you understand less explicit aspects of the passage. Try to separate main ideas from supporting ideas or evidence. Try also to separate the author’s own ideas or attitudes from information he or she is presenting.
- Note transitions from one idea to the next, and examine the relationships among the different ideas or parts of the passage. For example, are they contrasting? Are they complementary? Consider the points the author makes, the conclusions drawn, and how and why those points are made or conclusions are drawn.
- Read each question carefully and be certain that you understand exactly what is being asked.
- Always read all the answer choices before selecting the best answer.
- The best answer is the one that most accurately and most completely answers the questions being posed. Be careful not to pick an answer choice simply because it is a true statement. Be careful also not to be misled by answer choices that are only partially true or only partially satisfy the problem posed in the question.
- Answer the questions on the basis of the information provided in the passage. Do not rely on outside knowledge. Your own views or opinions may sometimes conflict with the views expressed or the information provided in the passage. Be sure that you work within the context of the passage. You should not expect to agree with everything you encounter in reading passages. **}}
Read the article carefully at least two to three times. Approach us with queries in case you have any.

Sometimes it becomes difficult to find out the main idea.Have you any technique to find the main idea easily?
What are the basic things which must be seen in comprehension reading?
Dear Veluri
It is very pleasing and easy going to read you on RC.
Thanks you for it.
Could you please sent practice RC passages like words list.
It will be great if practice passages would be timed as well.
Hope you will consider this request.
Khurram.
Dear Salem, ‘hasty generalizations’ are something like ‘ all women’ ‘all politicians’ ‘all men’…phrases that are made without any second thought..such answer choices which sound harsh and which comment on a particular group either illogically or wrongly are hasty generalizations..hope you got it Salem..pls do get back if you haven’t understood any point.
Thanks Manzoor, all the best if you are preparing for GRE. Do take the tests displayed on the website..

Dear Sajjad, you have to invariably run through the ‘Big Book’ published by the ETS..if you have it nothing like it..there are n number of books in the market that will cater to your requirement..Barron’s list is already displayed on this website so benefit from it..
See Murad, you must first be an alert and responsible reader. If you are doing these two things then I am sure you will grasp the main idea just by reading the first two or three lines. When you are reading read with lot of interest and love. That’s the only trick that will help you. You have to imagine a compelling future of yours that will give you the much required inspiration to read the passages thoroughly.

hello
i have read through your article and i can say that i have been able to gain somethings from it but my worry is that my gre exam is coming up in 15days and i have been studying with kaplan and using the learnwordlist on internet.my question is that, is there still a need for a tutorial class?
Hi, pls do not rush like that..u say u just have 15 days for preparation..so utilize that time frame thoroughly..I always keep telling my students don’t fall a prey to the final minute stress and tension..it has many negative effects..just revise what all you learned and stay confident..
Wishing you success!!
oh dear thanks a lot, urs material is very helpful for me.
again thanks for sending reading comprehension.
Hi Makwazir, thanks too…but tell me did you run through other blogs..the GRE High Frequency Words, Antonyms and Analogy blogs?? If you haven’t pls do that to lay hands on more and more techniques and information…
Hello Anu,
It’s been a while since I last visited your site, and wow, it’s grown a lot!
I shall be appearing for GRE on 2nd December and I feel I need to improve my speed in Reading Comprehension section.
Do you have any practice passages for us? I have done the Barron’s but I am told that the level of difficulty in the actual test is pretty higer..
It would be fantastic if some online material of such could be put up.
Regards,
Varun
Hi Varun, it’s been pretty long indeed!! Hey Varun did u try Norman Lewis’ Read faster and better..I think that’s one very good book offering viable techniques..for speed reading I think NL is good..I mean just for learning techniques and for practising what you are doing is better..we shall certainly come up with an RC segment..but the segment shud be really scientific u know..I just do not want to dump a few passages and give answer keys..students will do that luxuriously 1 hr 1 passage like that..we shall certainly come up with something really substantial..wherein a student starts valuing time and completes one RC in a slot of 4-5 minutes..what say? And Varun what are you doing for AWA??
Hello,
Yeah, it makes sense to put up time-bound RCs. And 4-5 minutes per RC should be ok.
But would like to be tested on them as well.
Nopes, I haven’t read NL’s Read Faster and Better.. The way I see it, I just need to keep my presence of mind at it’s peak during the examination. I have some strategy to attack the RCs, but I find trouble in implementing it. Often, I have to re-read some sentences to synthesize what is being said. But, as I do more and more practice, I seem to be improving! So, I think, right now I just need lots and lots of practice of RCs to crack them.
I keep reading some esoteric material every now and then.
I didn’t get ‘AWA’.. What is it?
Regards
Varun
Hmmm what you suggested is experienced by many students..regression is one obstacle on the way of reading we have to overcome it…but again as u said we need to be very alert while reading..AWA is Analytical writing Varun..
Oh, for the analytical part I have gone through what’s it like, but haven’t done so much practice as for other topics. I feel I would do fine in that, nevertheless I will also devout some time to it.
That needs equal attention Varun coz some reputed Universities in the US, consider AWA for admission…
Ok.. thank you for the caution. I think AWA is more or less based on logic and reasoning. I am doing my B. Tech from IIT Kanpur, where we work all the time with such stuff..
Again, as I mentioned earlier, improving my reading skills is at the top of my to-do list. Any help in that direction will be highly appreciated.
Regards
Varun
hmmm Varun, try murmuring as you read..i think that will help u understand better!..u can also jot down some imp points as u are reading..that makes you a responsible reader..if u are not interested in the topic, fall in love with it..lol…it sounds ridiculous, but believe me it works!! And yes Varun, hate regression!! i.e going back time and again..it shows one is not an active reader at all..focus ur vision on dates and achievements if the passage has any..if it’s a discursive type of passage that is many scientists sharing their opinion and kind, it’s better to note them all..at least the contradicting or main points..coz the questions are based where there is a ‘twist’ in the passage..
Yes, you are absolutely right.. I must fall in love with it! It will indirectly always keep me motivated to practice more and more of RCs.
Thank you for your wonderful advice. I shall get back to you and let you know howz my progress in RC.
Regards
Varun
Wishing you success in abundance!!
For sure one should read intensively and extensively. Being an eloquent speaker does not necessarily mean reading throughout but joining other activities such as drama club, public speaking, asking more and more relevant question such as the 5Ws. However, one also think critically on the basis of his/her area of relevancy. This will help one to diversify his/her sense of imagination, for example thinking on how to join the media houses so as to improve your vocabulary etc. I would also like to advice people who would like to improve their basics of talks to try and read variety of books and attend other relevant seminars towards aiming at achieving their objectives. Wishing you a prosperous achievement.
That was a wonderful piece of advice..Professionals like you should stop by and share these valuable things with all of us…
I request you to keep visiting us often.
Regards,
Thanks so much for those hints. They are quite helpful. But however, can we get a full syllabus of the GRE test content? and I was also thinking of a mock or something that can prepare us for the exams proper.
Hi Mallah, these blogs have covered the GRE exam in its entirety..have u gone through them all?? I suggest you run through all the articles in the blog segment..and there are many many tests displayed on the website..u can take them directly. These tests help in evaluating ur performance..
Please I am in Ghana, how much will it cause me to register and write this exam? What are the exam schedules and is it purely an online taking exam? Even if it is I can do it. Thank you.

with regards
hii satvinder
Sure ,i will send you comprehension practice set in your Id.
Hello,
As it seems becoming a habit to thanks you for articles. I will do the same. Thanks a lot ))).
From my point of view it is better to read a question firstly, whatever it asks, you should use your paper for making some notes, representing the whole text, just pay attention to the asked question. If it is not general question and requires specific details, read the answers before scanning the passage.
hii Sia
That is also good .why don’t you put this in forum section and see what others say about this.?Isn’t great???

Hi,
The article is very useful especially the lip-sync part and the ‘will never be the right choice’ part .
In the tests i have taken so far, ive seen long (about 5 paras) and short size (1 para) passages….what should be the maximum/minimum time that one should spend on each of the above in order to avail ample time for other sections like SC,Anologies and Antonyms and how much time should one take to
decide on the answer each answer for an RC question.
Also can u elucide the feature of ‘highlighting of certain words’ provided by ETS….are these words Key words pertaining to the questions asked…?
Hi,
Why does learwordlist.com not provide tests for RC section…
RC tests will make this site a complete verbal guide…
If im mistaken please to provide me the link for RC tests..
Thank you
Naveen, RC section is under construction so that is why it is not available, very soon you will find a new section.
Naveen thanks for your comment, in revised GRE ,the pattern of RC is going to change as there will be more questions on RC.I would suggest 40 to 60 min will be enough for RC.Read more:http://learnwordlist.com/blog/new-revised-gre-verbal-section-sample-questions-and-answers/2010/08/gre-word-list-test-blog-barrons-vocabulary

Tell me about General n subjective GRE n their difference…..
Why should one choose one of two?
Manoj, general GRE is a general test comprising (English, Maths, and Essay questions) for anybody who wish to seek admission under graduate program in US. Whereas, subject GRE is conducted for a specific subject( there are 8 subjects visit ets.org). You must check university website to learn whether you should apply for subject GRE or general test.
For PhD (Biotechnology)……… should I go with GRE general?

Hi.!
I have gone through enough strategies for text completion questions, and also a handsome of your vocabularies.
Though i feel confident, when i mock test some practice exercises online, my scores are dismally low at around 4/10..
Please suggest what more i can do to improve my results?
Will be grateful for a reply,
Sunny
