Ma’am, i m a civil engineering student and aspire to study in US for my masters. I will be taking my exam on 28th and so i m already very nervous. In the mocks i took, my score ranged between 1200 to 1400 and my college aggregate, as of now, stands above 65% or abt 8.2 GPA. So could you suggest me univs that i may apply to… I dont expect my score to rise too much now.

  12. shipra on September 28th, 2010 5:05 am

Chaitanya , US universities rate GPA on the scale of 1-4 , and 65% would be around 1 GPA.If your academic records are not good enough then you must hard to secure decent GRE score in order to get good graduate school.kindly tell me in which stream you want to pursue your masters.

  30. Debayan Chakraborty on July 21st, 2011 7:42 pm

I gave my general GRE today, and I did not score well. My score reads Verbal-510;Quant-770. I have done my undergrad in chemistry from St Stephen’s College,India and right now pursuing a Masters program at the University of Oxford. My grade in Masters is A, which is considered to very good in Oxford. I am assured of getting good reccomendations from my profs here.
I also have research experience, besides my MSc thesis I have also done 3 summer projects during my undergraduate study. I wish to apply for phD programs in U.S. Universities. Initially I had decided on UC Berkeley, Princeton and Caltech, but after seeing my GRE score, I think only a miracle can get me into one of those places. Should I consider retaking the GRE or apply to places which accept lower GRE scores, or still continue with my application trusting my recommendations and GPA

  31. shipra on July 22nd, 2011 4:33 am

Debayan, do bear in mind excellent GRE is never a guarantee for top notch US university, though their cut off is usually quite high. Along with GRE, factors like your excellent academics, Recommendation letter, many more things decide your final enrollment. I would suggest contact university through website and ask for minimal GRE cut off in your discipline. Make your final decision accordingly.
