GRE: A Synopsis

Sponsored Links

Many students have asked us what GRE is. GRE is the Graduate Record Examination conducted by the ETS or the Educational Testing Service, headquartered in New Jersey, US. It is one of the eligibility tests taken by the students to seek admission into their favorite graduate course. All the Masters’ degrees are termed graduate courses in the US. GRE supplements the student’s undergraduate courses and the scores provide common measures for comparing the qualifications of applicants and help in evaluating grades and recommendations. Besides the General GRE there is also a Subject GRE for eight different subjects. Students aspiring for a Master’s degree usually take General GRE.

The General GRE Test has three main testing components (and one unidentified pretest section pertaining to either Verbal or Quantitative reasoning for a period of 30 minutes).

  1. Verbal Reasoning
  2. Quantitative Aptitude
  3. Analytical Writing

Free GRE prepThe scores for the components are 800 each for Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude and for Analytical Writing the score is over a scale of Six points. Students who score more than 4 points are stated to have done well in the exam. A good score in GRE assures a good university (also taking a student’s academic performance into consideration!)

The skills measured in GRE as stated by the ETS:

**(Verbal Reasoning — The skills measured include the test taker’s ability to:

  • analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it
  • analyze relationships among component parts of sentences
  • recognize relationships between words and concepts

Quantitative Reasoning — The skills measured include the test taker’s ability to:

  • understand basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis
  • reason quantitatively
  • solve problems in a quantitative setting

Analytical Writing — The skills measured include the test taker’s ability to:

  • articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively
  • examine claims and accompanying evidence
  • support ideas with relevant reasons and examples
  • sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion
  • control the elements of standard written English)**

Coming to the Verbal Reasoning Section, there are five important components that are tested:

  1. Antonyms ( opposite of a given word)
  2. Analogies ( word pair relation)
  3. Sentence Completion ( single, double blanks)
  4. Text completion with two or three blanks (A new section that was introduced in the year 2007)
  5. Reading Comprehension Passages (generally 3 in number, containing500-750 words each)

The total time given for both Verbal and Quantitative Sections is 30 minutes each, and there are precisely 38 questions in each section to answer. The Analytical Writing segment has two tasks: 1 Issue task (45 minutes) and 1 Argument task (30 minutes). An unidentified Quantitative or Verbal pretest section may be included and may appear in any order after the analytical writing section (as commented by the ETS). And the time given for the pretest section is 30 minutes. The total time taken for a GRE test is 3 hours approximately (with a 15 minutes break)!

Dear students, this is all about GRE. From next week onwards we will deal with the test components one by one. To begin with let’s discuss ‘Antonyms’ from the GRE perspective- the sample questions, the strategies etc.

In case you have anything to add, please do comment. We shall be extremely grateful for your contribution.

  58. J. Andrew Greaves on September 14th, 2009 10:09 am

I am a young Liberia who is anticipating to further my education in any university that would allow me to enroll. We are just from 14years of brutal civil insurgency which destroyed over 300,000 lives and left several other thousands affected physically, mentally, sociallly, spiritually ,etc and there is a need that we mend our broken peices. This can only be successful only if I acquire formal education that would give me the moral right to join in the rebuilding processes of our nation.

Inview of this and many more, I therefore, solicitingyour help to enable me to continue my academic sojourn.
    Thanks
    J. Andrew L. Greaves

  59. Afol on September 14th, 2009 1:00 pm

I have been hearing about GRE now it’s quite an age. Please, I will like to know if as an African (Nigerian) I could get full scholarship for my Masters Degree in Management Information Science/Information Security AND how to go about it. I mean from Scratch. Thanks for your anticipated response.

  60. AnuVeluri on September 14th, 2009 4:17 pm

Dear Tamanna, general GRE is what most of the students take to pursue their Master’s in the US. Subject GRE is for students who want to research on a specific subject that too from a top rated university. A good GRE score will certainly help u a seat in a decent school, I am afraid getting a good job is a different subject altogether..nothing to do with ur GRE score…

  61. AnuVeluri on September 14th, 2009 4:21 pm

Dear Andrew, we wish you success for all the noble aspirations u have . What is that u are actually looking for? We are online trainers for GRE..we don’t provide any systematic education and award a degree..however u can run through all our posts, blogs, take tests and benefit a great deal…

  72. christine on October 1st, 2009 5:44 pm

hi please i really have not understood how the GRE is scored. i know it is scored on 800 and that the verbal section is 800points, the quantitative is 800points and the analytical is 6pts.
having this in mind what percentages does each section occupy especially the analytical section which is scored least?
thanks for your collaboration and waiting for a reply

  73. AnuVeluri on October 2nd, 2009 6:59 am

Dear Christine, there is no official cut off stated by the ETS. But it is better u score above 550 in Verbal and 700 in Quants for securing a good University. And it is not very tough to score 4 in AWA..I have seen many students scoring more than that and some walking away with a cool 5.5…

Dear Sir, thanks a lot for your program, it’s really such a wonderful one. However, I want you to guide me on how to start the course on GRE, where to begin from and where to end it so that I can start as soon as possible. Again I want to know whether it is registered for free or for a fee and also the time that candidates are to register and where to register.

  97. AnuVeluri on November 16th, 2009 4:28 pm

Hi Emmanuel, there are many blogs on the website that guide you t the GRE exam..nevertheless to register for the test you need to visit the site ww.ets.org..which will give you comprehensive insight into the exam..there’s a fee specified for the exam all the points can be collected on the site..

  98. meenakshi on December 3rd, 2009 2:57 pm

i want to ask as to want all u need after cracking gre, what kind of a resume, what about the weightage of extra ciriculars etc

  99. AnuVeluri on December 4th, 2009 1:57 am

Hi Meenakshi, the board I mean the admission board focuses on your academic record primarily..A Resume is a basic one..good if u have some extracurricular activities u were involved in to show them..but these are to be subject related again like Paper Presentations, Project work etc etc, Subject related elocution, debates..if u got a prize or participated in a musical entertainment I am afraid that will not give you any kind of edge..sports do have some value..coz they tell the board that you are an energetic person..

Is GRE is sufficient for postgradute study in USA or I have to give TOEFL also?

  167. E Amponsah on April 13th, 2010 11:13 am

I find GRE most interesting and have serious plans of undertaking the course. My foremost concern is that most schools require of students to undego certain aptitude tests like SAT, TOEFL just to mention these. However my only worry is that will these schools which demand these other requirements recognize GRE if I submit that to them.

I prefer your online style of tutorial, but if you could have blend it or take traditional classroom pattern of lecturing would help some of us a lot.
If GRE is graduate record examination, what is the meaning of TOELF and SAT?

    Have a nice working Hour.

Thanks for your comment Ofori, first let me clear your doubt about TOFEL and SAT.TOEFL test is only for international students to demonstrate English language competency if they are applying in some English speaking country. On other SAT is for undergraduate courses ,and it is mandatory for everybody while applying in US.Now, come to other part of your question as we know GRE is CBT test so there is no previous year papers available, still you can take help from various books. Finally, thanks for appreciating our work .Keep visiting us.

I wanna take my masters degree from north American university in the field of international development or environment. I’ve visited sites for information and I got enough information there.
but information that I need about one particular question is that, I’m very confused and disappointed with my undergrad result. my CGPA is 3.3. Is this point is is enough to get admission? is the evaluation system considers academic result, GRE and TOEFL sore as a package? how much weight is given to the academic score? If I have good score in GRE and TOEFL can this help me to recover the gap in academic result? now I’m taking DELF degree from ALIANCE FRANCAISE in French language, does it be helpful as supplementary for admission? How can I get fund to complete my study? On what basis scholarships are given?

please, help me in this regard. This will help me to materialize my dream.

    sincerely

  305. adones on December 27th, 2010 3:11 pm

    hi,

I have a query on the experimental section.

can we get any of AWA, Verbal or Quants as experimental section?.

is the experimental section the last part of the test like for eg

AWA, verbal, Quants, Verbal – can we say that the last verbal section is experimental.

will we get like AWA quants, quants (experimental supposedly), verbal.

or will the same sections not folow each other like vebal, verbal (experimental supposedly)
can we deduce whether a section is experimental by the nature of questions. i heard that they would mostly be unfamiliar questions?

    Kindly clarify.

  306. shipra on December 28th, 2010 4:28 am

Thanks for your comment adnoes, experimental section is very unpredictable it could be AWA, Verbal or Quants. Although the experimental section does not count toward the test-taker’s score, it is unidentified and appears identical to the real (scored) part of the test. As test takers have no clear way of knowing which section is experimental, they are forced to complete this section.

  307. adones on December 28th, 2010 3:30 pm

    hi shirpa,

thanks for clarifying. is there any chance we get the same section back to back in the exam like verbal followed by another verbal section and then quants. or quants and then verbal followed by another verbal section or will the sections always alternate
quants followed by vebal followed by quants.(pattern similar to this)?

    Hi,
I am the student of CSE. Recently I have completed my graduation. Now I am interested in GRE because of higher studying in USA or CANADA. But my gpa is not good 3.20. Should I attend in GRE exam? I am very confused. Suppose my GRE score is good, at that moment, will my gpa in BSC effetc on my scholarship? I want to be sure about this. Then i’ll take my GRE preperation. Plz suggest me. I’ll wait for your reply.

  379. shipra on July 29th, 2011 4:34 am

Thanks for your comment Preety, first let me tell your GRE can be taken only after 16 years of school education. Definitely, you need to perform exceptionally in GRE if your academics record is not good. Still i would suggest contact concerned university’s website and speak with the councelor for better assistance.
