GRE 2011 Aspirants: Attention!!

Dear all, if you’re planning to take GRE in 2011 then this blog contains significant information for you because major transitions are taking place in the GRE 2011 format. The GRE revised General Test, launching in 2011, is more centered upon the knack needed in today’s demanding graduate and business school programs. And it can help you make more informed admission’s decisions. Along with this there is a very important ETS announcement about 50-percent price reduction in the test fee for all individuals who will take the test between August 1 and September 30, 2011. Let we discuss about some major changes in GRE test changes first:

A new test-taker favorable design

Revised GRE will be more flexible. Changed GRE will include many new navigation features, including the ability to skip questions and go back and forth within a section for a better test-taking experience. Test takers will surely love this feature, but now they have to be more heedful about time management. Test taker will also be provided with on screen calculator.

Changes in verbal and analytical section

In changed GRE, verbal section will have approx 20 question. Time limit for AWA section will be 30 min each (issue, argument).No more out of context vocabulary. Antonyms and analogies will be completely abolished in revised GRE. Now focus will be shifted on Reading Comprehension (RC) section as more comprehensions will be included in revised GRE. In new format test takers will be allowed to choose more than one option.

50 percent discount to take revised GRE

50% discount is available for those who wish to take their test from August 1, 2011 – September 30, 2011. Registration for same will be start from 15 March 2011.

Changed scoring pattern

Verbal Reasoning scores will be reported on a new 130 – 170 score scale (not like traditional 200 – 800).There is no changes in Analytical Writing scores it will continue to be reported on the same 0 – 6 score level.

   However, if you can throw more light on how to adapt with this new patterns of GRE will be helpful to us. Secondly, is it the good change for students or difficult change? Which alterations will needed in preparation to cope up with the changes?

   Wayne,if you are going for test any where in Feb 2011 then don’t be confuse ,go ahead with as usual pattern( in regard to time limit).

    Sayonendu,if you are well prepared then you can go for test now , but if you think you need some time then go for revised GRE, as ETS is saying revised GRE will be betther than current format.

    Shatabdi, this depends upon you.I would like to say if you are prepared thoroughly ,then register for test now.But if you are not confident about your preparation then take your time and go for revised test.

    I did take GRE in Nov 2009 in which I got 1140/1600 (Math 620, Verbal 520). Now I am preparing again and planning to take GRE in March-April 2011. I am hopeful that I would do better. What I want to ask is that if Antonyms and Analogies are abolished, what else would be in the GRE verbal section? Only sentence Completion and Comprehension? Or something new would be introduced?

    Phani , vocab questions will be out of picture for sure ,but more focus will be on RC section means more focus on reading .If you are good at learning then current format is bet for high score.

    Thanks for your mail jennifer, if you are aiming for GRE on or after 1 August 2011 then you have to work on comprehension studies, but if you are going for your test before 1 August 2011 then there is no need to worry because you will see same old pattern with antonym and synonyms.

    Hey Shipra. I want to take the GRE 2011 sometime btwn Aug-Sept 30th. I wanted to know what the points for each section….the grad school I will be applying to states that they only accept applicants with a minimum GRE of 1000 but I dont know if that’s in regards to the old GRE.

    Basically how many points was the old GRE out of and how many is the new GRE out of?

    Also, just to be clear, there have been no changes made to the math section? The only thing that has been changed in terms of the content is the fact that there will not be any analogies or antonyms?

     But, I also want to know that what is the maximum scholarship a student can get through GRE and TOEFL for ms? is the scholarship reduced by 50% on GRE? or is it the same. Depending on score upto 100%.

However if you score excellent in these test then you can have advantage over other despite having poor academic records( in case). Rest things varies scholarship to scholarship.      I still have a doubt about the scoring Earlier when the scoring was 200-800 scale, the max that a person could score on a GRE test was 1600. Now that it is on 130-170 scale, does that make the maximum score to be 340???

     Aniket, GRE is specific for Masters and post doc programs in US. For that you must have complete 16 years of education..If you have completed the aforementioned criteria than sure you can go for the test.

     d dates for july were opening consistently. however, now it gives an error saying “An invalid program was passed in by your referring web site”. any idea on this problem.
     i had prepared for gre old pattern. will all my efforts go waste if i give the new gre? will d 3500 word list still be useful?

     Earlier a person use to get at least 200 even if he leaves the whole section unattempted in 200-800 score scale. So now in 130-170 scale will a person will be given 130 atleast even if he answers all questions wrong????

     he stated that learning high freq. words 4m Barron’s is sufficient..

     I would be taking GRE in december 2011. So when would my final scoresheet be available to me?? And I have heard that like it used to happen that once you finish your test your score appears on screen then and there only,but in new pattern you would have to wait for 2-4 weeks for those taking GRE in december,is it true?? please tell me something about it,I need to know this at earliest .
     And as vocab would not be the main thing to worry about as it has been ommited,so what material should i follow or what wordlist would help?? or still i have to mug Barrons wordlist???

     Pushpender, GRE score remain valid for 5 years. So you can go for GRE when you fee you are best prepared. However, i would suggest sit for test in your final semester.

     I will be taking the GRE computer based test (ibt) by the end of this year. Based on the new GRE pattern , I have purchased the ‘New GRE-Barron’s’ book. But I am not able to find any word list chapters or anything related to word list and meanings in the new book. It contains only model test papers, solutions and explanations how to deal with each section tactfully. Kindly let me know whether I shall directly start looking into the model papers (as there are no word lists).
